It’s looking like garden season

It’s looking like garden season has begun. We’re in a strange zone here, officially we’re 8A now but historically we’ve been 7B. And while this week has great temps, next week has some nights down into the 30’s. So hardy plants can go out, but peppers and tomatoes are still in the greenhouse.

Speaking of which, if you’re local and you haven’t been to LL Goodnights greenhouse in China Grove, I highly recommend it for quality of plants and pricing. When I went the other day, their tomato and pepper seedlings were mostly $1 each. And if that isn’t enough, the plants are super healthy and you buy how many you need! if you want one of each variety you can get just one. And if you had a major failure of seeds sprouting in the greenhouse they can fill in so you don’t lose your entire garden season to poor greenhouse conditions. But that’s another story!

Back to the garden. My husband and the kids have helped so much!!! We’re revamping the garden for raised beds. That and my rolling chair have been a game changer for me.

And my perennials are coming back.

Some of my strawberries in the Greenstalk planters survived. Many are being replaced. We did move them to a location with more sun. Under the tree they just didn’t get enough sunshine or rain to thrive. Another game changer, we put them on spinner’s this year! I can tell already that will make a huge difference!

Although this time of year is a lot of hard labor, we’re going to need at least four pickup truck loads of soil to fill the raised beds, still it’s also one of the most enjoyable times of the year for me with gardening. It’s the season of new plans and hope in the garden. It’s also the season that I see my chiropractor the most, hence why we’re putting in raised beds this year.

Off to get out there, tomorrow I return to work in the studio and office so I need to make the most of today!

  1. Those spinny things look awesome!! So does that rolly chair! How do you keep the animals away?? Here, even if I just did containers on my deck they would have to be completely covered with chicken wire. Squirrels, birds, bunnies, raccoons, deer . . .

    1. The fenced in garden is inside a fenced in yard, plus we have dogs and that keeps most critters away.

Birds, well, we split the produce with them, or I get up super early to pick. “Up before the birds” was how we picked strawberries when I was a kid. LOL
